QUARTERLY LICENSING COURT

Elworthy, Esqs., Commissioners.] The Quarterly Licensing Court for the Timaru, Levels, and Mount Cook districts was held this morning. applications. Mr A. Perry, on behalf of Mrs Howie, asked the Bench for an expression of opinion. Mrs Howie contemplated the erection of a substantial brick hotel at Sandietowm, but before doing so wrnuld like to know what chance there would be of her obtaining a license on the completion of the house, A hotel was much wanted in the locality indicated, and a large number of residents had signed a petition in favor of the establishment of one.
After consulting together for some little time, the Bench said that they were of opinion that there was no occasion at present for a hotel at Sandietown. TRANSFER. Mr Hamerslcy applied on behalf of Dennis Hoare for a transfer of the Shamrock Hotel to John Callanan. Granted. LEVELS DISTRICT TRANSFERS. Messrs White and Hamerslcy applied on behalf of Mrs Emma Hope for a transfer of the license of a Hotel Pleasant Point, from J. Connan to herself. Inspector Pender opposed the granting of the application as he did not consider Mrs Hope a fit person to have the management of a hotel. A. O. Gilmour, publican, said he did not consider any woman fit to manage a hotel by herself. Constable Stanley said that he had been stationed at Pleasant Point. Mrs Hope had been in Connan’s house for some time past managing for him. There had been frequent complaints about the way the house was conducted. R, Orton, formerly livery stablekeeper, Pleasant Point, was of opinion that Mrs Hope was not fit to manage the hotel. She had no control over it.
In reply to the Bencli Mr White said that Mrs Hope would lose something over £4OO if her application was refused. The application was adjourned by the Bench,after considerable discussion, for 14 days. MOUNT COOK' DISTRICT. A transfer of tbc license of the Tekapo Hotel from J. McLeod to W. Wheeler was granted. A transfer of the license of the Burke’s Pass Hotel from J. Butler to J. McLeod was granted. CIIARGH Ok TKR.MIT’JTNG GAMBLING. Joseph Nelson was charged with permitting gambling with cards and for money at bis licensed house, the Opihi Hotel, Opibi, John Macplierson stated that be visited the bouse of the defendant about the middle of last month. Connon was with him. They threw for drinks and also for money, but no money passed. Witness won £3 10s. John Connon was with the last witness when lie went to the Opibi Hotel last month ; thought it was the IGtli. They were throwing for drinks and also for money, hut no monej' passed, and the winner only demanded his winnings “ in a jocular sort of way.” Mr White submitted that no offence had been committed. People might amuse themselves as much as they liked with dice so long as it could be shown that, no money had passed. The defendant was fined os and costs, and was also cautioned by the Bencli.
