THE DUNEDIN CUP.

The writer of Sporting Notes in the “ Dunedin Star” says ; —Foul Play and Natator were this morning scratched for the Dunedin Cup, and Marie Antoinette for all engagements. The mare is, we believe, to go to the stud. The scratching of Foul Play and Natator we are not surprised at, any more than we were at the withdrawal of Betrayer and Lure, for while Messrs Lance and Stead are so lucky as to get their horses thrown into Canterbury, Auckland, and Wellington races as they are it is not wonderful that they prefer to keep them in the North. However, Dunedin races will probably manage to survive even if these owners withdraw all their horses, and it is to be hoped that our handicappers will not by these scratchings be intimidated into treating such horses any more leniently than their performances entitle them to. We have full confidence in the judgment of our present handicappers, and public opinion, as expressed on the handicap for the Dunedin Cup, supports our own—that Foul Play, Natator, Betrayer, and Lure were not at all overweighted. To show what a certainty the Auckland Cup is thought for either Foul Play or Betrayer, we may mention that on Wednesday night the stable cornmission took 400 to 100 about the former and 600 to 150 about the hitter —or to the short price of 4to 1 each.
