SIR ARTHUR GORDON AT WELLINGTON.
His Excellency Sir Arthur Gordon arrived at Wellington Heads from Auckland at 10.J0 yesterday morning. At o p.m. the Ilinemoa, surrounded by yachts, steamed up to the wharf, and Ids Excellency was immediately surrounded by Ministers and other celebrities. The wharf was lined by the volunteers and members of friendly societies, backed up up by a promiscuous crowd of woebegone under-secretaries and discharged civil servants. On his Excellency stepping ashore he was confronted by tbe Town Clerk who read an address, in which the Council on behalf of the citizens assured Sir Arthur that they were loyal subjects. His Excellency replied in appropriate terms, expressing the hope that as they were, like the rest of the colony, brimful of loyalty, they would know how to behave themselves. The inevitable carriage in four now made its appearance, and his Excellency was driven to the Government House, where a series of fresh ordeals awaited him, for'thc Hibernian and Oddfellows’ Societies presented him with characteristic addresses. The swearing in ceremony was terminated with three cheers for his Excellency, who then retired from the scene tolerably exhausted, and wondering whether it was all genuine. For the benelit of the waste paper basket a “ Supplementary Gazette” has been issued proclaiming the assumption of Sir Arthur to the Governorship.
