BOROUGH. COUNCIL.
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the above took place last evening. Present:—His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Gibson, Jackssou, Sherratt, Filmer, Shepherd, and Cullman. CORK ESPONDEN CE Was read from George Atkinson, asking the Council to contribute towards the cost of the water-cart. It was resolved that Air Atkinson be informed that the loan of the watercart is the Council s contribution to-, ward’s watering the streets. f From Charles Sivalls,agent for Cole s circuis, asking for the use of the site occupied by Chiarini’s circus for December 18. It was resolved to grant the request on the payment of £o and tha rental fees. APPLICATION. Air Hammond, Inspector of Schools, waited on the Council to ask them to reconsider the question of forming the footpath past the Side School in the Alain South road. The work was very urgently wanted as a matter of safety to the children, and its cost would not exceed, £2O. The Board of Education would contribute a small portion of the expense should the Council entertain the application. The Mayor remarked that the Council were not in a position to spend money, but that the matter should have the consideration of the meeting. { It was then moA r ed by Cr Gibson, seconded by Cr Jackson, and carried—- “ That the AVorks Committee be asked to visit the site of the new Side School, and report at the next ordinary meeting on the footpath with a view to granting the application of the Board of Education. Mr Hammond thanked the Council and withdrew. LODGING HOUSES. Unsolved —“That the AVorks Committee be requested to report upon the steps to be taken to license lodging houses within the Borough, as was done in Christchurch and Dunedin, with a view to prevent overcrowding, and to prevent unhealthy places being used for such purposes.” WATERWORKS FORMAN OF WORKS. Twenty-three applications were received for the above appointment, which, after considerable discussion was conferred on Air J. L. Potter at a salary of £3 10s per week. ACCOUNTS. The following accounts weic passed for payment : —General, £l3ll 11s Gd ; AAhitcrworks, £BGG 7s 3d ; total, £1023 Ids t»d. CUTTING WATER PIPES. Thomas Elliott’s tender for cutting water pipes, at £3O 2s Gd, was accepted. A MUNICIPAL STEED. The foreman of works having recommended the purchase of a horse for the use of the Council, it was moved by Cr. Sherratt, seconded by Cr. Cullman, and carried—“ That the purchase of a horse for the Council’s use be left to Crs. Jackson and Gibson. A RESOLUTION RESCINDED. Alovcd by Cr. Gibson, seconded by Cr. Shepherd, and carried—“ That the resolution passed on June 28 last, refusing to bear any part of the cost of cutting defective water pipes be rescinded. Some routine business was transacted and the Council ad-journed.
