SIR ALEXANDER COCKBURN.

The death is announced of Sir Alexander Cockburn, Lord Chief Justice of England. The deceased was born in London in 1805, so that he reached the ripe age of 75. He received his education at Trinity College, Cambridge, was admitted to the Middle Temple in 1825, and four years later was called to the Bar. In 1841 he became Q.C., and nine years later his fidelity to.the Government of the day and his defence of the Palmerston foreign policy secured him the appointment of Solicitor-General and the honor of knighthood. Subsequently he became Attorney-General under Lord Aberdeen, and on the overthrow of the Derby administration in 1850 the Lord Palmerston Government appointed him to the ofilce which he has since held.
