EXPENSIVE SPORT.

At the R.iVT. Court, Christchurch, yesterday, Thomas McCullmu, on remand from Saturday last, was charged with drunkenness and with having caused serious injury to Thomas Goodfellow, a gatekeeper, whom he had ridden over at the racecourse on the 12th hist., and whose shoulder had been dislocated in the encounter. Arthur Parsons deposed to being near prisoner ou the course, who called out, “clear the way, you fellows, and I will ride that b down.” Prisoner then put his horse to a canter and rode over Goodfellow, wlio at the time had his back turned to him. The horse was under perfect control, and the assault had been deliberate. Prisoner was drunk. Goodfellow stated that at the time named lie had been collecting some entrance money from the driver of a vehicle which passed through the gate, and on his way back to the post he was knocked down by a horse that came up behind him. When he ruse he found that his shoulder hud been dislocated.

The prisoner was the rider of the horse. He was a perfect stranger to witness, and had received no provocation. Prisoner pleaded guilty to being drunk and riding furiously, but said tbe collision was accidental. Accused was lined £lO, or two month’s imprisonment with hard labor, half the fine to go to the injured man.
