The Melbourne “ Argus” of the Dth inst. says the suspicious ninning of the horse Mata during the V.K.C. SpringMeeting has met with prompt treatment at the hands of the stewards. The following notice was posted at the office of the Club yesterday “ The stewards having considered the running of the horse Mata in the Koval Park Stakes, on the 4th November, 1880, have decided that the jockcj' Kay shall bo disqualified from riding or training any horse, and that the horse Mata shall be disqualified from running upon the Flemington racecourse.” “Beacon,” writing in the “ Leader” on the Cnp race, *says:—“Of all the defeats, the most unaccountable was that of Mata, who ran well to the straight, whore he dropped back, comingin amongst (lie nick. It may be that this horse has boon asked to do too much on the training ground. Be this as it may, the position he held in the race was very unsatisfactory after all the blow which lias been indulged in about this New Zealander.”

“ Falcon” writes :—“ Mata, I am informed is likely to remain here for the remainder of the season, so we shall have an opportunity of further judging this horse, whether he be as good* as report would have us to believe, and whether Ids Cup racing was up to his standard form. His running has been so great a disappointment to his backers that they are not satisfied that it is his true running, and cannot understand his having to lower his flag to 3min 3 fsccs, with only Bst 21b up. It is therefore as well that he should remain and give us a further opportunity of judging his worth.” Fay was the rider of Mata in the Royal Park Stakes. The “Age” says the investigation held by the Y.li.C. Committee into Mata’s running for the Cup came to nothing, but suspicions are abroad that the horse did not do his best possible for the Cup, and was suffering from the “ metallic” influence of the betting ring,
