Meat, Minerals, and Reg-atla. Auckland Xov. 13. llich gold lias been struck in the prospector’s claim at To Aroha. Specimens of artilicial coal, manufactured from Waikato coal dust, have been sent out from England to the Auckland Museum. The Auckland .Meat Preserving Company have received an extensive order from the German war-ship Hyauo. The united Friendly Societies will march in procession on St. Patrick’s Day. An Aucklander, who recently visited Parihaka, recognised nearly 50 of the Lower Waikato natives there amongst the most devoted followers of Te Whiti. Mr Pitt on the Platform. Xki.sox, Xov. 13. Mr Pitt, M.1f.1i., addressed the City electors last night. After referring to the work of last session, he gave the Government credit for honestly endeavoring to place the finances of the colony on a sound basis, and expressed his belief that the colony had a great future. He thought the public works scheme had, by the high wages paid attracted miners and others, but that now these would turn their attention to mining and other industries. He would not vote for the introduction of the Bible into schools, even if such were shown to be the desire o£ the majority of the colonists. He did not think it necessary to till the vacancy caused by Vogel’s retirement. He received a vote of thanks and confidence. The Settling: Up. Ciiuisrc'iiuacii, Xov. 13. Supposed Suicide of a liove’slck Maid. Dunedix, Xov. Id, A strange affair is being enquired into by the police. This morning on the southern recreation ground were found a woman’s dress, brooch, carings, and a letter signed “ Mary Prescott,” addressed to her family in which the writer says in consequence of a friend having been false to her, she intended doing away with herself. The things were found alongside of the water’s edge and have since been identified as belonging to Mary Prescott, aged 20, who recently quarrelled with her lover, and threatened to commit suicide. The
police are invostigatng whether the affair is a hoax or not/ Dunedin Anglican Synod. The Anglican Synod have decided against free seats. Bishop Seville announced that the Bev. William Cast, son of the Dean of York, has accepted a license for this diocese. The Svnod resolved to request the Government to extend lo the Church of England an equal opportunity for the instruction of its children in the Industrial School, with that accorded to the Homan Catholic Church.
