A NEW TANNING PROCESS.
[Bv Teleohapji.] NeI.SOX JSoiiTU. At one of the tanneries some excellent leather manufactured by the Chrome process has been turned out, although in a very limited quantity'. The leather is pronounced by the trade to be of a very' superior quality, its manufacture occupied only' about a month. A great saving both as regards cost and time is confidently expected. The chrome deposits of this neighborhood will bo shortly worked.
The “ Scotsman ” of August 28 thus refers to the process : —Yesterday the Eglinfon Chemical Company' held a semi-public exhibition in their premises in Globe street, Glasgow of leather which had been prepared by Dr Hoinzcrling’s patent process of potash and other mineral substances. A large number of gentlemen connected with the leather trade from various parts of the kingdom, and several scientific gentlemen, visited the works and inspected the process, and the leather produced, such as boots ami shoes belting, etc. The chief object and result of the process has been to reduce the length of time taken to tan leather and the cost of its production- By' the new process leather can be produced in three or four weeks, while by the old it takes ten or twelve months. Besides, in working it a smaller capital and less plant are required, and the cost of production is greatly lessoned. This company have within the last two mouths produced JOO hides, and overhead the cost has been calculated at 1 !M0 per lb of leather, whereas by the old process the cost ranged from Id to yd. In addition to these advantages it is claimed that the chrome process, as it is called, gives a better yield of leather, that the leather so produced is much more durable than that produced by' the other method, and that hides of any' thickness can be tanned by' it.
