An ordinary meeting of: the above was held last evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Boss, Jackson, Jones, Cullman, Filmcr, Greenup, Gibson, Shepherd, and Gabites. Was read from George Atkinson, asking whether the Council would grant him the use of the Borough watercart, and intimating that in the event of their doing so lie would be prepared to keep the principal streets well watered during the summer months, the cost to bo defrayed by subscriptions from the business people. He would guarantee that the cart should be returned in good condition, a fair allowance being made tor wear and tear. The Mayor thought the Council should be very much obliged to Mr Atkinson for taking the responsibility of keeping the street watered. The general feeling seemed to favor the application which was granted, subject to conditions to be arranged by the Works Committee. From Wm. Moore, complaining that his application for the post of clerk of works (waterworks) had been passed over. He did not know whether this had been intentional or otherwise, but thought the matter ought to be enquired into. The Mayor was quite sure that the fact of Air Moore’s application not having been read was a pure oversight. The Clerk had better reply to Air Moore, expressing the Council’s regret, and assuring him that his letter had been accidentally overlooked. accounts. The Finance Committee in reporting on the late lire at the Mechanics’ Institute, drew' the attention of the Council to an account rendered by C. F. Hallam, of the baths, for water supplied at the fire. This was the first claim of the kind ever made, and was, in the Committee’s opinion, a gross overcharge. THE LATE EIRE. The Captain of the Fire Brigade reported on the late fire, and suggested the appointment of two fire inspectors, and also the purchase of 100 ) yards of hose. An account was rendered for volunteers’ pay. The Captain drew the Council’s attention to the fact that volunteers were allowed 3s for the first hour’s work, and 2s per hour afterwards. The Mayor said that in the midst of the fire he was informed by Inspector Bender that the men had refused to work at the engine unless they were promised payment.
