SECOND EDITION

The following correspondence has passed between the medical stall' of the Hospital and the Commissioners : “Mr Chairman and Gentlemen, —■ Pending the appointment of a new house surgeon, we have sought this interview with you to humbly suggest that the medical and surgical treatment of the patients with its responsibilities be vested in the medical staff, as is the custom in all similar institutions, thereby making the office of honorary visiting otliccrs a responsible and publicly recognised one, without in the least trenching upon the power or authority of the Commissioners over the House Surgeon, whose duties would still be executive ; that is to say lie will still have the sole control over the general working of the hospital and be responsible.—[Signed by tlic medical stall.] Timaru Hospital, Xov. 3, 1880. Dr Hammond, Sir,—The Commissioners have carefully considered the application from the medical stall , and I beg to hand you cue i\.Mowing copy of a resolution passed at a meeting held this day : “ The position of the resident surgeon was considered, and in reply to the medical staff, the Commissioners do not feci inclined to make any change in the resident surgeon’s present position with the medical stall, but will feel indebted to the medical gentlemen in giving their assistance, as consulting physicians, as heretofore.” I have the honor to be, Sir, Your obedient servant, Tiios.
