[Bv Cable.] Melbourne, Nov. 2. The second day’s races of the \ ictorian Racing Club’s Spring meeting was held to-day at Flemington. The weather was splendid, and there was an immense concourse of spectators —estimated at over 100,000—-on the course. It is believed it has never before been so crowded. The Marquis of Normanby, Sir William Jervoise, and the Duke of Manchester were present. The following are the results of the chief events, the fields for which were large, and the racing good : Maiden Plate, a sweepstakes of 10 sovs each, h. ft., with 200 added. For three year olds and upwards. Weight for age. One mile and a half. Orient ... ... ••• ••• ••• 1 Exeter 2 Hermionc ... ••• J Won easily. Time—2min 44secs. Railway Stakes, a sweepstakes of 5 sovs each, with 100 added. For three year olds and upwards. Weight for age. Winner of any race (not a handicap) of the value of 100 sovs to carry 71b extra ; of two or more such races, I4lb extra. One mile and a quarter. Mr F. Long’s b h Monarque ... t Mr L. L. Smith’s b c Douglaston ... J Mr J. Whittinghara’s b c Chatterer 3 A dead heat between the first two. Time —2min 14scc. Melbourne Cup, a handicap sweepstakes of 20 sovs each 10 ft., or 5 if declared, with 500 added. The winner of anj 7 handicap race of the value of 100 sovs after the declaration of the weights to carry 31b extra ; of any such race of the value of 200 sovs, 51b extra ; of any such race of the value of 500 sovs, 71b extra. Penalties not accumulative. The second horse to receive 200 sovs, and the third 100 sovs out of the stake. Two miles. (109 subs.) Mr W. A. Long’s b c Grand Flaneur, 3yrs, 7st3lb 1 Mr W. Branch’s b c Progress, 3yrs, Ist 101 b 2 >lr F.R.L. Rossi’s hr h Lord Burghlcjr, syrs, 75t51b... ... ... 3 Twenty horses started in the Cup, which was a capital race. Mata never showed to the front. Progress led for some distance, when Lothair and Grand Flaneur came up at the home turn, the latter winning a splendid race by three quarters of a length from Progress ; Lord Burghley third, and Lothair, Martindale, and Chester following. Time —3 min 31] sec. Napper Tandy was placed third by the judge but this was found to bo an error. The Paulino Stakes, a sweepstake of 5 sovs each, with 100 added. For three. - year - olds and upwards. Weight for age. One mile and a half. Supple Jack and Latrobc ran a dead heat. Six horses started. Time--2mins. 44secs. Later. Grand Flaneur's winning the Cup makes it hard on the bookmakers. He bad been largely backed in doubles. Flaneur has never yet been beaten and bis victory to-day is very popular. All placed horses were strong favorities, showing that they were running true.
