THE MELBOURNE CUP.
A jirojm of the Melbourne Cup today—the most eventful twenty-four hours of the year to all Victorians —it is already rumored that the toilettes of the ladies will eclipse all former efforts. If so, the “ Lawn ” will present a sight which will indeed be worth seeing. A faint preliminary taste of what may be forthcoming will probably bo shadowed shortly on the occasion of_ a first performance, which is to be given on the Flcmington racecourse lawn by the grand Austrian baud, just arrived by the mail steamet Aconcagua. The band consists of 50 celebrated instrumentalists, and, as high expectations have been raised concerning them, there will, no doubt, be a large assemblage to criticise their opening performance. A novelty is to be introduced in connection with the affair, which I dare say will prove very interesting. During the Austrian band’s performance, the horses entered for the Cup arc to be paraded on the course in front of the lawn, tUe jockeys being dressed in their respective racing costumes.
