THE LATE FIRE.

The following graceful exchange of compliments is worthy of all emulation : “ Tiinaru, Ist iN T ov., 18S0. “ The Captain, “ Tiinaru Tire Brigade. '• Hear Sir, —Being interested in the building next to the Mechanics’ Institute, and feeling much indebted to the

Brigade for their exertions at the late lire, I should like to bo permitted to contribute to their sick and accident fund, or to such purposes as your Committee may deem fit, the enclosed cheque for the sum of £lO 10s, with the thanks of the Company which I represent. “ I am, Dear Sir, “Yours faithfully, “ John Jackson, “ Agent Colonial Insurance Company.” “ In reference to the above, the members of tlic Timaru Volunteer Fire Brigade desire to publicly express their thanks to Mr John Jackson for his liberal donation to the funds of the Brigade. “ Signed) T. Phelps, Captain.” NVc may add that the Timaru liremen are in the habit of complaining that their pecuniary necessities arc not sufficiently recognised, by the Insurance Companies. After the above substantial recognition it is to be presumed that our gallant brigadiers will heartily pray that fires in Timaru may be more frequent than they have been for some time past. A few donations like that of Mr Jackson would help their uniforms amazingly.
