THE MELBOURNE BETTING MARKET.
Speculation on the principal events o£ the Y. 11. C. has (reports the ‘ Australasian ’) been pretty brisk during the past week. For the Maribyrnong Plate, Monmouth, on the strength of a reputed splendid trial, has fairly ousted Royal Maid from the premier position, and nothing beyond G to 1 is now obtainable about the brother of Chester. Spinningdale may be reckoned the third favorite. Grand Flaneur continues to harden for the Derby, for which 500 to 200 was taken in one line on Tuesday evening. Progress received support at sto 1, 200 to 10 being booked about the sou of Angler ; but still the public seem to have some faith in Respite, who receives attention at 10 to 1. Heron has advanced a point, and we have heard of 500 to 25 having been accepted about Nero. For the Cup, Lord Burleigh is now (the 16th) undoubtedly first favorite, for after the acceptance of 2000 to 180 an oiler was made to take 10,000 to 1,000. Mata for some reason has receded to 100 to 5, and Fau Bias to 100 to I, though both horses are still doing good work. Darriwell now and then has small sums invested in his favor at 100 to 6, and Chester has improved again. Richmond, too, is advancing, 500 to 20 having been accepted, and Grand Flaneur is supported at tire same price. Pawnbroker has plenty 7 of friends at 100 to 3.
