WANGANUI SBRING MEETING. The following are the results of the concluding events at yesterday’s races : Wanganui Stakes Handicap, of £l6O. Hailstorm, 9st2lb ... ... 1 Opawa, Bst 41b ... ... 2 Rocket, Bst 41 b ... ... 3 Astronomer, Ottawa, My Dream, Marie Stewart and Wilberforcc also started. Wilbcrforce made the running for a mile, and then Rocket assumed command, with Hailstorm second. Entering the straight, Hailstorm challenged the leader, and gradually wore him down, -winning by a length. Opawa came with a rush at the finish, and beat Rocket for second place by a head. Tliis was a slashing race between lirst and second, both running node and neck the whole way. Hailstorm ran very gamely and won by half a length. Soukar never could get up, and linishcd a bad third. Two others started. Time—2mins. d7secs. Consolation' Stakes. My Dream 1 Docket 2 Opawa ... ... ... 3 This was a very fast race, with a good linish.
The latest quotations in the betting on the Canterbury races, as given in the Christchurch papers, show Foul Play to be first favourite for the Cup at 5 to 1, Lure being next in demand at 100 to 10. The latter lilly still holds her own in the betting on the Dcrbj*, for which she has been backed at 100 to 40. Betrayer is at 100 to 18 for the C.J.C. Handicap, while Foul Play and Lc Loup arc at 100 to lh. For the Welcome Stakes, Idalium and ilinemoa divide the honours at b to 1 each. Somnus being quoted at 100 to 18. Melbourne, Oct. 20. Mr Field’s British Workman is scratched for the Cup.
