South Canterbury Times, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 26, 1880. NEWS OF THE DAY.

From and after Nov. 1 next the sittings of the District Court for the transaction of civil business will be held bn the 11th of each month, and criminal sittings will be held on March 11 and September 11. A man named John Cook, in the employment of Eeid and Gray, ironfounders, Dunedin, was arrested on Saturday for committing a criminal assault on his daughter, aged eight years. The Property Assessment Act is looked upon as the most vicious and demoralising measure that has ever been introduced by a colonial legislature. According to the leading organs of the Ministry, the honest fools of the community will bear the weight of the burden.

The '* Age” has returned five members of its staff to the Victorian Parliament— Professor Pearson, who writes leaders; O’Hea, who writes libels ; Dow, the literary cornstalk; Deakin, of peppery renown ; and John Quick, who follows the Courts and bristles with law points. The “ Otago Daily Times ” concludes an article on the late address of the Member for Cheviot, as follows If Mr Saunders ever comes to Dunedin, our advice to the citizens is, “Don’t put him under the pump.” The cream of the joke is that Mr Alfred Saunders is a strong believer in hydropathy. Altogether a hundred members of the Armed Constabulary Force on the West Coast have resigned owing to the discontent at the 10 per cent reductions. The Grey Liver “ Argus ” says the Government have determined not to fill the vacancies. This will result in a saving of £SO a day or £10,250 a year—Boo men still remain at a cost of £146,000 per annum for the improvement of Taranaki. The performance of the ‘‘Lancashire Lass” was repeated last evening, at the Theatre Loyal. For this evening a very attractive programme has been prepared consisting of a (Scottish musical drama, “ Cramond Brig, or the Gudeman of Ballingeich,” and the amusing burlesque of “ 11.M.5. Pinbehind, which, if report speaks truly is full of good things.
