BOROUGH COUNCIL.

An ordinary meeting of the above was held last evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Ross, Jackson, Jones, Cullman, Filmer, Greenup, Sherratt, and Gibson. CORRESPONDENCE. Two applications for transfers of leases No. 438 and 220 were granted. Several letters were referred to the Works Committee to deal with. WATEEWOEKS ITEMS. It was resolved—“ That the Mayor and Councillors Gibson and Shepherd be authorised to sign and complete the agreement between Mr John Whittaker and this Council in re the purchase and exchange of land for Waterworks purposes ; also, that the same persons be authorised to act in the same way as between Mr P. H. Russell and the Council ; and also to sign contracts Nos. 4,5, G, 7,9, and 10, entered into to-night.” After a lengthy discussion on the respective merits of galvanised iron water pipes v. lead pipes, it was resolved on the recommendation of the engineer, to employ the former, as being cheaper and more efficient than lead. The purchase of the piping was referred to the Waterworks Committee, with instructions to report. About 30 applications were received for the above appointment. Mr Win. Annand was appointed at a salary of £3 10s per week, the engagement to be terminable on one month’s notice on either side. TENDERS. Tenders were accepted as follows : Contract No. 4 —2oooft 18in stoneware pipes—Messrs Ford and Ogden, £GOO. Contracts Nos. 5, G, and 7 —Each 2000 ft 18in stoneware pipes—Messrs Austin and Kirk, £1575. Contract No. 9 —Section No. 2 Race work —J. O’Leary, £B4 19s lOd (eleven tenders). Contract No. 10—Section No. 3, Race work —Fraser and Nicholls, £197 10s (eight tenders). The Engineers presented plans and specifications of four more sections of the water-race, and these were adopted and tenders ordered to be advertised for. One of these, Contract No 11, comprises the construction of three syphons, and another, No IG, the construction of'a Jong tunnel. FOREMAN OF WOEKs’ REPORT. The above report was read respecting the erection of street lamps in south of Timaru. Resolved —“ That tenders be called for shingling the newdy formed streets in the south of the town and Sophia street.” UNPAID RATES. Resolved —“That the Rate Collector be empowered to employ the Council’s solicitor for the purpose of getting in the first lot of unpaid rates.” ACCOUNTS. The following accounts were passed for payment: —General, £lll 17s od ; Waterworks, £24110s Gd ; total, £356 7s lid. The Council then adjourned.
