Religion.
The religious needs of the population arc met by the existence of 2715 churches and chapels. All the denominations are self-supporting, the annual . grant of £50,000 having ceased on 31st December, ■ 1875 The number of registered clergy in the i colony is 684, in the following proportions :- | Church of England, 146; Roman Catholic, 8/; | Presbyterian, 154; Wesleyan, 143; Congregation- I alists, 47; Baptists, 47; Lutherans, 13 ; Welsh | Calvinists, 2; other sects, 48; Jews, 7. A great 1 interest is evinced in religious matters in the colony, and some of the most eloquent preachers ; in the old country have paid the colony a visit and ;
preached in the pulpits of the various denominational churches.
