SPORTING.

SECOND EDITION

NOTES. A foal, only 12 days old, by Guy Faux out of Brunette, the steeplechase mare, has been sold for sixty guineas. Brunette, it will be remembered, was offered at Mr Steve Hoskins’ sale at Otaio the other day, and bought in for £3O. Guy Faux is the property of Mr E. J. Hawkins, News concerning Mata is conflicting, “Augur,” in the “ Australasian,” says he is somewhat stiff at starting, and recent telegrams favor the supposition that he has declined. The fact that a wellknown sporting man, however, who has just returned from Melbourne, is freely offering 7 to 1 shows that his chances are considered excellent. It is said that over £40,000 have been laid on the New Zealander for the Cup. It is stated that Mr Yeend intends bringing his new purchase, Intrepid, to New Zealand. Intrepid recently won a race at Kensington carrying 13 stone. “ Hermit,” the sporting correspondent of the “Queenslander,” informs hia readers that Grand Flaneur, the recent A.J.C. Derby winner, will, should he be similarly fortunate in Victoria, be sent home to measure strides with the English cracks. I should scarcely think the speculation would be a success. The programme for the Hawkes Bay Jockey Club’s March Meeting is out. About £I3OO is offered, the chief prize being a 500-guinea cup.
