Mr Phipps is making capital headway with the new wharf. Boring for the piles is being prosecuted vigorously, but the rock is very hard. It is much to be regretted that the main work—the extension of the Breakwater—continues at a standstill, as in addition to the number of hands kept out of employment, the non-completion of the contract will interfere with the construction of the timber works. Mr Upton invites tenders for outbuildings (labor only) at Otipua road. Mr W. Knight will in future carry on the buisness of painter decorater &c. in the premises lately occupied by Mr Craigie, corner of Beswick Street. Lectures on Co-operation will be delivered under the auspices of the Canterbury Farmers’ Association by Mr William Bateman of Christchurch, at Geraldine this evening, at Temuka to-morrow evening at Fairlie Creek on Wednesday, St. Andrews on Thursday, and Timaru on Tuesday 6th inst. Attention is called to the prospectus of the Association in our advertising columns. The annual meeting of the South Canterbury Caledonian Society will be held m the Grosvenor Hotel on Wednesday evening. According to the “ N.Z. Times” tire reason why it was found necessary to send Mr Stratford on to Greyraouth in such haste was that Mr James Mackay, the R.M. at Greymouth had been arrested for debt.
