DUNTROON RACES.
Oamabu, Oct. 14. The Waitaki Jockey Club races were commenced to-day. The day was wet but the racing on the whole was good. The following are the results :
Maiden Plate, of 25 sovs ; 1-| miles. Mr W. Maitland’s Ned Kelly, 7st 41b 1 Mr A. Gunn’s Magician, 9st2lb ... 2 Mr E. Lefevre’s Honest Jack, 9st 31b 3 Waitaki County Plate, of 35sovs; miles.
Mr T. C. Hill’s Unknown, lOst lib... 1 Mr J. Gibson’s Blue Peter, 9st 71b ... 2 Mr A. Gunn’s Magician, 7st 3 Blue Peter got away with the lead, with Unknown second and Honest Jack third. At the back of the course Unknown assumed the lead with Blue Peter in second place, and Shillelagh in the third,Honest Jack last. Unknown won easily. Waitaki Cup, of 100 sovs; 2 miles. Mr P. Shaw’s Adamant, 7st 101 b ... 1 Mr E. Mason’s Eandwiclr, 7st 51b... 2 Mr H. Goodman’s Tera, 6st 101 b ... 3 York was scratched.
A bad start was made, Adamant getting away a good lead, but was soon overhauled by Emerald. Opposite the Stand the five horses were in a cluster, but on coming into the straight Rand wick went to the front, hard held ; Tera second, Emerald third. These positions were maintained until opposite the Stand again, when Adamant went to the front and won a a good race. Randwick was close up, and Tera was third. This was a very exciting race. It was the opinion of many that had Randwick been ridden as he should have been he would have won the race. The trotting was won by Nellie, and the Hack Selling Race by Sultana. Second Day. [By Telegraph.] Duntroon, Oct. 15. The races were continued to-day. The weather was beautiful, and there was a good attendance. Handicap Hurdle Rack of 50 sovs; distance, 2 miles ; over 8 flights of hurdles, 3ft 3in high. C. Bourne’s Milo, lOst 12lb ... 1 W. Maitland’s Shillelagh, Bst 101 b... 2 J. H. Lunn’s Robin Hood,Bst 101 b... 3 Waitaki Jockey Club Handicap, of 60 sovs ; a sweep of 2 sovs, the sweep to go to second horse ; distance, If miles ; winner of the Cup to carry 71bs. R. Mason’s Randwick, 7st 71b ... 1 H. Goodman’s Tera, 6st 121 b ... 2 Goddard’s Emerald, 6st 3 Clarence, Blue Peter, Adamant, Unknown, and York were scratched. THE MELBOURNE CUP.
