A “GOVERNESS” IN TROUBLE.

At the R. M. Court this morning, before It. Beetharn, Esq. ]t. M., Lily Greaves alias Lily Green, a young girl of about 17 years of age, was charged on remand from Dunedin, with the larceny of £4, the property of Mrs Elizabeth Watkins, of Church street, Timaru. The police were not prepared to go on with the case, and the accused was remanded until Friday morning. When asked to plead the accused maintained an obstinate silence, and refused to utter a word. Mr Beetham said a plea of not guilty had better be entered. The facts of the case so far as known, are that the accused, who is said to have been educated at the Lyttelton Orphanage, arrived in Timaru a short time back, and called upon Mrs Watkins, a widow lady, to whom she represented herself as a governess out of employment, well connected, but in necessitous circumstances. Mrs Watkins believing her story invited her to come and stay with her until she could get a situation. She accepted the invitation and remained with her patroness for about ten days, when taking advantage of the latter’s temporary absence, she helped herself to four sovereigns from a purse belonging to Mrs Watkins, and immediately travelled south. Detective Kirby traced her as far as Oamaru and from thence to Dunedin, where she was arrested and remanded to Timaru.
