BOROUGH COUNCIL.

An ordinary meeting of the above took place last night. Present —His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Filmer, Cullman, Gib son, Jackson, Shepherd, Jackson, and Greenup. CORKESI’OXDENCK. Was read from Cr Boss, apologising for his absence on account of illness. From John Alton for Mr James Bruce, rc rates now due by Mr Bruce, and atating that he had gone to the Melbourne Exhibition, but the matter would be at once attended to on his return, and asking the Council to stop proceedings, pending Mr Bruce’s return home. It was resolved that the Council could not make any exception in Mr Bruce’s case, and the request must therefore be refused.

From the Sydenham Borough Council, asking for particulars about the borough ; the number of oflicers employed ; the number of burgesses, ami the rateable property within the borough, Am.

The clerk read a letter he had forwarded furnishing the required information.

From Mr F. Archer re proposed dismissal of Inspector Pender, and suggestthat steps should bo taken by the Council to memorialise Government with a view to retaining Mr Pender in his present position. The Mayor said he had first to ascertain whether there was any truth in the minor of Inspector Pender’s dismissal If he found there was he would communicate with the Colonial Secretary on the matter.

From Mr Thompson, contract surveyor, stating that he had commenced the survey of the water race, and was making good progress with the work. From the Fire Brigade, notifying the resignation of Captain Turnbull and the election of Lieut. Philps in his stead. The resignation was accepted, and the new appointment approved. From the Secretary to the Treasury, re borough subsidy and hospital and charitable aid.

It was resolved that no action be taken in the matter until the conference on the subject with Geraldine County Council had taken place. From Mr James Bruce, re storm water on his premises in Grey street.

Referred to Works Committee. From Mr D. M. Ross, re the construction of the Bank street gully sewer. Moved by Cr Gibson, seconded by Cr Cullman —“That in reply to the letter of I). M. Ross re construction of the Bank street gully sewer, he be informed the Council are willing to construct the sewer as soon as £3O are paid into the Borough funds account; also, that the Works Committee be authorised to call for tenders for the works as soon as these terms are complied with. From the A. and P. Association, asking his Worship to proclaim Tuesday and Wednesday, October 2tJ and 27, the Show days, as public and bank halfholidays in South Cantcrburj-. From Mr T. Machin Architect, applying on behalf of Mr John Barratt for permission to remove the latter’s show room of his Coach Factory, from its prescut position in Main South Road to back section in Beach Road, as a temporary arrangement. The Mayor was opposed to the granting of the application. It would he thought be the duty of the Council to give notice, that within a specified time all wooden structures must be removed. Several Councillors also spoke .against the granting of the application. No fees had been forwarded with the application and it was refused. TIIK WATKUWOUKS. The following resolutions were passed : “ That the Mayor and Crs Gibson and Shepherd be authorised to sign and execute the agreements entered into by the Waterworks Committee between die Council and Robert Elms, David Caird, and Edward Tregair/a in connection with the Timaru and Parcora "Waterworks, also that they be authorised to complete the execution of contract No. 3, Timaru and Pareora water race.” “That applications bo called far a foreman of works to superintend the waterworks contracts,” “ That the 55th provision of By law No. 1 be suspended to allow the plans and specifications for contracts Nos. 9, and 10 to be received and adopted.”

A NUISANCE. A letter was read from a number of residents drawing the attention of the Council to the fact that the drainage from the Government Buildings had become connected with the culvert of Sophia street from which it ran into the open gully by the Oddfellows’ Hall and was likely to prove a source of considerable danger to health in the hot weather. Referred to Works Committee, TENDERS. The following tenders were opened:— Supply of tunics, &c., for Fire Brigade—Hallonstein Bros., £2 13 6d; W. F. Newbcry. £3 15 ; Hobbs, £1 Is ; Kelly, £-1 7s 6d ; Cowan and Foster, £1 8s Gd. It was resolved to refer the tenders to the Works Committee and the Captain of the Brigade with power to act. Continuation of C street culvert— The tender of Donald Me Kenzic £23 15s Gd was accepted. Contract No. B—Waterwork8 —Waterworks —J. and M. Corkery, £l2lO Ms lOd ; R. B. Sibley, £1571; E. Sturrock, £1595 Ms 7d ; William Barnes, £1700; Jones and Peters, £1315 ss. Tho tender of Messrs J. and M. Corkery was accepted. A I’ORI'EIT. A letter was read from Timothy Lyons in which ho expressed his desire to withdraw from his contract, and asked for the return of his deposit of £2O. application rc return of money was refused. ACCOUNTS, The following accounts were passed for payment: —General, £199 9s 8d ; Waterworks, £O7 ; total £266 9s Bd. The Council shortly after adjourned.
