The Camera Obscura on LeCren’s Terrace is attracting numerous visitors. Its stay being limited, those who have not seen the exhibition should do so as soon as possible. Messrs Gibson and Cockroft announce a grand art union distribution of jewellery to come off on Oct. 26. The reputation of this old established firm is a guaranteethat the prizes, consisting of magnificent watches, diamond sets and other choice and valuable articles, are genuine and can be depended on. There are many who can afford to lose ten shillings on a venture yet cannot afford the insignia of wealth which a gold watch or diamond necklace indicates, but Messrs Gibson and Cockroft have evidently determined to meet their wishes. We understand that Dr Wilkins, oculist and aurist, will return to Christchurch, where he intends settling permanently, this week. Dr Wilkins has been appointed to the Christchurch hospital for some time, past and we have been made acquainted with a large number of cases which he has treated in that institution with the happiest results. Among these we may mention that of John Lewis, aged 74, who was totally blind from glaucoma, a most difficult and almost incurable malady, and that of a child that was bom blind, but who, under his treatment can now see perfectly. A young lad who recently arrived from England was admitted as a blind incurable, but after an operation he has had his sight perfectly restored. A child of nine years, born blind, has also recovered her sight in Christchurch under the Doctor’s treatment. These cases are well authenticated and they place Dr Wilkin’s skill beyond a doubt. It is to be hoped, for the sake of those who are suffering diseases of the eye and ear, in this district, that although he is returning to Christchurch he will pay South Canterbury a periodical visit.
The Mary King, schooner, arrived from Lyttelton, this afternoon and moored off the Breakwater. This vessel and another one were seen at an early hour this morning beating about the beach, and some fears were at one time entertained for their safety as they once or twice came very close inshore. The Mary King got safely in about two o’clock, but the other vessel is still a considerable distance off.
