[Pee “Times” Special Wiee.l Hotel Robbery. Wellington, Oct. 12. A young man named Walter Frank Thomas, arrested on two charges of larceny from hotels was sentenced to three months with hard labor. Serious Railway Accident. At Halcombe a woman named Ellen Conrad met with a serious accident while crossing the railway on Saturday night. She was caught by the cowcatcher, breaking her right thigh besides inflicting other wounds. Tottering. A smart shock of earthquake was felt on Saturday, and sligher shocks at 7 and 8 p.m. The direction was N.W. to S.E. No damage was done. Saved by Steam, a Happy Thought. Nelson, Oct 11. Kendell’s flax mill at Wakefield has been destroyed by a fire caused by friction. The scutching shed and about two tons of flax were destroyed, but the engine shed, which is contiguous, was saved by filling the place with steam. There was no insurance. Death ofa Banker. Haskayne Jones, who has been connected with the Bank of New South Wales for a quarter of a century, died somewhat suddenly this morning. Although he had been ailing for some time, he appeared better in health lately. Degal. At the District Court to-day an action was brought against Lowe, second pilot, by Hamilton and son, for injuries sustained by the latter boy having been most severely scalded as alleged, through defendant turning on steam into the waste pipe on board the steamer lying alongside the wharf at the time. A legal point was raised that father and son were improperly joined in the action, and thereupon plaintiffs were nonsuited. A Fowl Smotberer. Cheistchurch, Oct. 11. Michael Martin was fined 20s in the Magistrate’s Court to-day for cruelty to fowls. He had brought 38 fowls 40 miles by railway in a box 3ft by 2ft and 2ft deep. Several were dead on their arrival in Christchurch. The Akaroa Jack Sheppard. The prisoner Hagland who escaped for the second time from the Akaroa lock-up was recaptured to-day at Amberley. Sale ol a Stallion. A trotting stallion was sold by auction to-day for 150 guineas to James Adams. Vengeance Demanded. Dunedin, Oct. 11. All the papers have articles endorsing the verdict of the jury re the Kyebnrn murder, and urging the police to bring justice to the others who must have been concerned in the murder. Blighted Enterprise. At the City Court Alexander Wilson received three months for obtaining money by false pretences. Escaped from Custody. Ann Purcell, who in a few days would have completed her sentence, died in gaol last night from consumption. A Gigantic Deputation. Invercargill, Oct. 8. Messrs Bain and Shanks M.H.R.’s on Saturday received a deputation of nearly one hundred of the principal citizens urging them to protest against the dismissal of Inspector Fox. The members promised to represent to the Government that if it is necessary to abolish inspectorships. Fox ought to be offered a position similar to his present One, with lower pay and a different title. Fox as the result of seventeen years service, has a large family of eleven children and much sympathy is felt for him. Too Knowing for Southland. A whale was chased off the Bluff on Saturday, but the boats failed catch it.
