ODDFELLOWSHIP.

A public meeting was held on Tuesday at the Woodbury Hotel .for the purpose of organising a lodge of the M.U., 1.0.0. F. There was a numerous attendance, and on the motion of Mr Oscar Louis, seconded by Mr Fraser. Mr J. Dean was voted to the chair.

The Chairman introduced the proceedings by reading the advertisement convening the meeting. He said that if they established a lodge it would bo a decided benefit to the inhabitants of Woodbury, as it would be the means of getting a resident doctor. He then called upon Mr Louis to give a further explanation of the advantages of Oddfellowship. Mr Louis explained that the Manchester Unity was the working man’s friend, and had special attractions for married men. At the same time he advised young men to join,because after they once become Oddfellows they would make better husbands, better fathers, and members of society. He pointed out that in cases of distress every Oddfellow assisted ; that many Oddfellows had been saved from starvation ami ruin in this manner. He bad been an Oddfellow for many years and had not received any benefits, but be was very pleased that he had.never wanted any, and if he had he know that his brother Oddfellows would have rallied round him. He stated that in order to open a Lodge eleven persons necessaiy. About 20 persons put their names down and paid the usual fee.

It was resolved that Mr J. Dean be treasurer .pro tem, and that the lodge be called “ The Loyal 'Woodbury Lodge ; ” meetings to be held at the Woodbury Hotel, the proprietor having offered the use of Ids Assembly Room for a period of twelve months free of charge ; also, that meetings be held every alternate Saturday. A vote of thanks was given to Mr Louis for the interest he had taken in organising and explaining the duties and rules to bo observed in establishing the above branch.

A vote of thanks was also given to the host, Mr Burton, for his kind offer, and a vote of thanks to the chairman closed the meeting.
