TUMUKA

[fkom OUK OWN CORHKSPONDENT,] The town of Tcmuka looked rather lively a little after 12 o’clock to-day. The sergeant of police arrested a man about this time, and was proceeding towards the lock-up, when just after turning the corner past the Crown Hotel

the arrested one said he wanted to be carried, and resolutely stretched himself, A passing civilian was asked to assist, which he did by taking hold of the man’s hand, and asking him to come along quietly, but at this time a constable also arrived, and a crowd of people gathered to see the fun. They tried to induce the prisoner to walk, but he insisted that they must carry him. The sergeant now gave orders to handcuff him, and he was promptly tied with his arms behind his back. Then with one on each side they proceeded, but they had not gone far when the prisoner threw his legs off the ground. “One ! two ! three ! ” shouted the officer, and then the man found himself on the ground. Picked up again the prisoner tried the same game but only to find himself on the broad of his back. The expedient was successful, for he was speedily cured of his obduracy and walked like a man to the lock-up. I have been given to understand by Mr George Meredith’s son that he has several tons of coal taken out of the Kakaliu coal mine, and will have a load in Temuka as a sample this week. The coal is equal to Kaitangata coal, in fact I have tried the two together and an expert could not detect the difference. The price will be very low—about .Cl 5s the ton.
