GERALDINE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The usual monthly mooting of the abovo took place to-day. Present—Mr (I. C. Tripp (Chairman), and Messrs Uardcastle, Gray, Clulcc, Mendelson, and Scaly. COKUKSrONDEXCK. From tho Colonial Secretary, acknowledging receipt of a letter from tho Council, and stating that there was a reserve of 1200 acres on the south side of tho Rangitata bridge, a small portion of which could bo taken for tho erection of a toll-house, &c. From .Mr James Watkins, stating that as it appeared that the Geraldine County Counci {have command of the reserve on the south side of the Rangitata bridge, the writer considered that it would be wise to let the reserve, the money to go towards the repairs of the bridge. The Chairman remarked that the land had not yet been made over to the Council by the Government. After some discussion Mr Mendelson proposed and Mr Hardcastle seconded the following resolution which was carried —“ That Messrs Sealey, Acton, and Clulee, form a committee to interview Mr Wakefield ro obtaining the

1200 acre reserve at the Rangitata bridge.” From the Chairman Waitaki County Council enclosing that Council’s engineer’s report upon a proposed bridge over the Ohou River. Some discussion took place with reference to the best desciption of bridge to be erected. Ultimately it was proposed by Mr Sealy, seconded by Mr Clulee, and carried—“ That the letter from the Waitald County Council rc Ohou river bridge be referred to the Mount Cook Road Board, with the request that they would permit their engineer to report on the probable cost of a traffic bridge.” From Mr J. Mundle, Geraldine, asking if the Council had any funds available for the relief of the necessitous as he knew of the case of a poor woman who had no means of support and no children to help her. The Council considered that the step-children of the person referred to ought to contribute to her support. From Mr Durham, Inspector of Slaughterhouses, referring to slaughtering licenses and renewals, and informing the Council that a conviction had been obtained since the last meeting, against a person slaughtering pigs without a license. THE OPIHI BRIDGE. Mr Sealey remarked that as the Council were now in funds, he thought something ought to be done as soon as possible with regard to bridging the Opihi river. He would propose that the sum of £4,000 being part of the sum lying to the credit of the Council at the bank, be set apart for the above purpose. The motion was seconded by Mr Acton and carried. It was further resolved that the Temuka Road Board be asked to furnish the Council with any plans they may have for the proposed Opihi bridge. HALE YEARLY BALANCE. The half yearly balance sheet for the month ending Sept. 30, 1880, was submitted by the Treasurer, Mr G. F. Clulee, and showed a credit balance in hand of £4330 9s 3d. The balance sheet was adopted. The Chairman moved a vote of thanks to the Treasurer for his trouble in preparing the balance sheet. Mr Acton had very great pleasure in seconding the motion. He trusted that such a direct expression of the Council’s thanks might in some measure recompense Mr Clulee for having to sit at the Council table. THE GOVERNMENT PAYMENTS. With reference to the recent payment by the Government of the sum of £3609 4s 2d, which had been in dispute for some time past, it was resolved—“ That the thanks of the Council be tendered to Mr Wakefield for his exertions in obtaining for the Council the above fund due from the Government.” It was also further resolved —“ That in reference to the various amounts received from the Paymaster-General, aud unaccompanied by explanation as to the source oh such amounts, the Govermueut be respectfully requested to furnish details of same to the Council.” HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID. Resolved—“ That Messrs Sealy,Mendelson, aud Acton be appointed a committee to confer with the Borough Council re management of the Hospital and Charitable Aid. accounts. | Accounts amounting to £ll 16s 8d were passed for payment. adjournment. The Council then adjourned to Nov. 2.
