Smith (17), for rape, was sentenced to three months imprisonment and three private whippings with a cat, of twelve lashes each. Cecelia Carroll and Eliza Harris, two girls, for stealing from a dwelling, received six months each. {Arrest of aßis.ch Bootor. Wellington, Oct. 5. The cook of the schooner Madeline has been arrested for attempting to use a knife against one of the seamen. Accused is a colored man. § Prosecution of a Whit s One. 9 Foxton, Get G. The case against John Fredk. Rockstow, breach of the Medical Practitioners Act, 18GD, was heard before the Resident Magistrate, and occupied the forenoon. Defendant conducted his own ease, and made a good defence. He produced letters from the Government showing that although aware that lie was not legally registered they urged him to accept the office of medical referee in connection with insurance and other posts. At the finish of the defendant’s speech there was considerable applause. The Bench inllieted a line of £25 and costs. Several witnesses refused to take their expenses (although they subscribed for the prosecution) when it was known that defendant had to pay. The Stiberatod Maoris. Christchurch, Oct. G The twenty-live Maori prisoners who arrived at Lyttelton yesterday from Dunedin, after interviewing the Maoris in gaol, have sailed in the Hinemoa for Wellington. Bunedin Criminal. Dunedin, Oct. G. Williams, for pcrjmy was sentenced six months. This completes the calendar, except the Kybnrn cases. Sad Bud of a Bankrupt Tamiiy. Six children were committed to the Industrial School by the City Bench today. The arc the family of O'Neill who was convicted at the Lawrence Circuit Court of fraudulent bankruptcy, and whose wife died since his conviction. Secondary Education in Banger. Invercargill, October G. In a communication to the Riverton school committee refusing to allow a school to be constituted a high school, the Minister of Education states certain alterations are contemplated in the legislation for secondary schools.
