[Pee “Tim.es”Special Wire.] An Industrial Son Exposed. Auckland, Sept. 30. Inspector Habeus’ report on tlic Auckland Industrial Horae has been presented. He finds that the legitimate authority of the ladies’ committee has been usurped by the master and matron. The children are all clad, but the supervision of the committee in this respect is defective. AVilh regard to the charges against the morality of the master he says —“Ho man is absolutely secure against such charges, but the master should be one against whom no impurity could be alleged.” He considers the master wanting in decision. Traiuingfor domestic duties is insullicieut and there is a great deal of slovenliness and untidiness. The matron is incompetent, and the moral influences of the home are not of a high order. He was unable to obtain information respecting diet. Itch, ringworm, soreheads, and vermin are prevalent. He considers the master incompetent. He concludes by stating that a gentleman has privately offered five hundred acres of laud for a home within a short distance of the railway. Syttelton Gaol In An Uproar, Ciiulstciiuucii, Sept. 30.. It is rumored here, that a disturbance
has occured with the Maoris, at Lyttleton gaol, or liipa Island. A telegram has just been received at the Police Depot, asking for additional men, LATER. The reported disturbance among the Maoris in Lyttelton Gaol is incorrect. It seems that the eight constables guarding the Maoris, disliking the work, refused duty, and a telegram was sent to Christchurch for men to replace them, A Worth Island Railway Company. Wellington, Sept. 30. At. a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce held to consider what action was possible for promoting the West Coast railway, a committee was formed to take the proper steps to form a company to be called the North Island West Coast Railway Company, and to report to another meeting as early as practicable, preparatory to bring the whole subject before the public. A 2’emale Target. A woman in Walker’s shooting gallery was shot through the arm by the accidental discharge of a gun. The wound is not serious. Tho&unedin Pilot Squabble. D uni-din, Sept. 30, The Chief Harbor Master refuses to reinstate pilot Louden. Mining. INVERCARGILL, Sept. 30. The manager of the Longwood Reefing Company (Print/,) lias brought ninety ounces of amalgam, the result of ten days crushing from sixty tons of stone, of which only only twenty-three tons were gold bearing. A Contradiction. The statement of the Christchurch deputation who asked the Premier for monetary aid for the late review that the Invercargill review was aided hy the Government is incorrect. The whole thing was carried out hy piddle subscription, entertainment, and gatemoney, and after the settlement of accounts the committee hud a balance of over £250.
