Sir Hercules, Lady, and Miss Kobinson, with Major and Mrs St. John, left Sydney at eight o’clock on Wednesday night, arrived at Gregory at seven, and A 1 bury at 10.1/7 next day, when Sir Hercules received an address of welcome, and was met by the Marquis of Xormanby and suite. The whole party left Aibury by special train, arriving in Melbourne at four in the afternoon, when they were welcomed by Lord Harvey Phipps and a guard of honor. Sir H. Bobinson remains the guest of the Marquis of .Xormanby until his departure for England. A daring robbery occurred at (be Government house. The Marquis of Xormanby had a dinner party, and the ladies before proceeding to the dining room, left several pieces of jewellery on the dressing table. During dinner sonic thief obtained access to (lie bedrooms and took all the jewellery within his roach and decamped. The cducE losses are suffered by Mrs Finlay Mrs St John, and Miss Bobinsou whose jewellery is valued at V lot). The police arc now investigating the matter, but no clue lias been found. The rough weather of last week completely broke the Sorata’s back, besides doing other heavy damage to the vessel. On Thursday night tilings looked their worst, and her commander and Captain 15egg Finlay decided that further efforts would he useless, although Tib,ooo had already been spent in cndcaving to float her. The forger, who gave the name of Henry Sewart, says he lias no accomplices. A number of liremon aboard the Sorata broke open several eases of bottled beer on Friday, got intoxicated and fought, (lie result being that one fireman was seriously wounded. A race between crews [licked from the man of-war Finisterrc and Cerberus came otf yesterday and resulted in a victory for the Cerberus, though by only a few feet.
SOUTH A U.STEAL lA. An inquiry has been opened in the Cape Jervais lighthouse to-day respecting the stranding of the Sorata. Some of the ul'licers and seamen were examined, but the proceedings were conducted privately. QUEENSLAND. The new Coverimr, Sir Arthur Kennedy, is a passenger per Cotopaxi. In the Assembly the position of the Premier, owing to the recent judgment, has been discussed. The Speaker declined to take action for the present. Mr Mcllwraith said he would he prepared at the proper time to prove that he never was a contractor under the Government.
