Special Settlers. Auckland, Sept. 21. Mr G. M. He id is now on Ins way to the colony as the representative of a large and wealthy .special settlement party, for whom lie will select a block of land in anticipation of their arrival. Mr lleid will be in Auckland in the middle of October with the first of a party, numbering - twelve or fourteen families, who bring out with them sixty or seventy thousand pounds. The others arrive at Auckland or Napier some time in December. Stud ETews. Amongst the passengers by the City of New York, for Sydney, is T. Ivory, jun., of the Ivory Stud ‘Company, Sydney. Ivory will return in about seven months with a siring of horses superior to those he recently brought to New Zealand. JX te’atal Harbor. Wellington, Sept. 21Anothcr body was taken out of the harbor this morning. It has not yet been identilled. This makes four within a fortnight. A Mutiny. A rumour has just reached town that a disturbance lias broke out among the hard labor gang of prisoners working near Newtown, and that one 01 two were rather severely handled. Complimentary. Mr Shaw, E.M, sat on the Bench for the last time to-day. At the close of the Court, Mr Gordon Allan, on behalf of the bar, complimented Mr Shaw on the manner in wiiieh he had performed his duties during his residence here. Mr Shaw, in response, eulogised the oflieers of the Court and spoke highly of the conduct of the police force of Wellington. Ho also thanked the bar for the assistance rendered during his stay. Mr Shaw is expected to return to New Plymouth to-morrow. JX Judicial Cowshed. Palmerston North, Sept. 21. At the close of the District Court business last evening a deputation from the bar and Borough Council waited on Judge Ilardcastlo to ask him again to communicate with the Government, and urge the absolute necessity for the immediate erection of a new building for which the money is now on the estimates. Yesterday was a pouring wet day, and the jurors not empannelled, along with the witnesses were obliged to crouch outside the building for shelter. As there was no room inside, the jury bad \to march down the street to an empty house to consider their verdicts, and part of the Court lixtnres had to bo removed to allow forms for the twelve jurymen to sit on. The Judge informed the deputation that ho heartily agreed with the strictures made, and he had recently written to the Department of Justice on the matter. He promised to take fresh action so as to have the building erected before next sittings. A Ruffian Rewarded. A notorious character named Thomas

Pearce, alias “ Roll and Co,” well known in Nelson, has been sentenced to twelve months for brutal assault. of drug's. Dunedin, Sept. 21. At twelve o’clock last night a fire broke out in the premises of Carrighan, chemist, Walker street. The stock was considerably damaged by breakage and water. It was insured for £550 in the Colonial and £4OO in the Norwich Union. The building is owned by Blakely, and was insured in the Royal for £BOO. It was only slightly damaged. Bad Farming Punished. Invercargill, Sept. 21. An action for £’2oo damages for bad farming, Brown and another v. Gumming (Mr Stout for plaintiff and Mr Russell for defendant), resulted in a verdict for plaintiff for 100 guineas and £lO 10s costs. Extensive Fencing. The N. Z. Agricultural Company tWaimoa plains) are fencing extensively. Contracts are out for 3G miles, besides another for 20,000 posts.
