The laying of another row of blocks at the Breakwater was completed to-day, but the monolith will not be shifted until Monday or Tuesday. Some doubt having been expressed as to whether the reef which formed the foundation of the Breakwater was composed of solid or detached rock, men have been employed during the last day or so in making trial borings along the north side of the Breakwater, for the purpose of settling the matter. So far it has been ascertained that the reef is formed of detached or drift rock, but it nevertheless affords a good bottom on which to workThe solid natural reef is situated at a depth of o 3 feet below the Breakwater, A full report on the trial borings will be laid before the next meeting of the Harbor Board.
The Christchurch Theatre Royal Dramatic Company will open at the Theatre Royal, Timaru, on Monday week (27th inst.) with a strong company, including the celebrated actor and author, Mr Walter Reynolds. The company will make their debut in the startling drama, “ Tried and True,” which has had such a successful run in Christchurch. Mr J. S. Willis, the premier scenic artist, arrived in Timaru to-day for the purpose of painting the scenes for the pieces to be put upon the boards. This is a guarantee that the scenery alone will be a splendid attraction. Dr Wilkins, F.R.C.S., the well-known dentist and aurist, announces his intention of visiting Timaru on October 4. Dr Wilkins is acknowledged to be"one of the most successful practitioners in eye, car, and throat cases in the colonies, and he has the advantage of being not merely a specialist but a duly qualified medical man. Mr James Craigie, painter and decorator, has removed to his new premises opposite the old post office. Mr George North, of Wellington, announces in our advertising columns his seventh sweep. The event is a £IOOO one on the Wellington Cup, to be run off in February, 1881. Mr North has received the highest credit for the manner in which his drawings have invariably been conducted.
