LANDLORDS IN IRELAND.
The return of the number o f ejectments executed in Ireland for nonpayment of rent in the year 1878 and 1871) has just been issued, and fully bears out the statements made by the Chief Secretary on this subject. In Munster there wore 498 ejectments in 1878, and 748 in 1879; in Connaught, .‘336 in 1878, and 488 in 1879 ; in the whole of Ireland, 1749 in 1878, as against 2677 in 1879 —that is to say, there was an excess of 928 ejectments last year over the number recorded in 1878. This year, as Mr Forster has shown, the landlords arc exercising their power in a still more arbitrary manner. To use Mr Charles Russell's words, “Hard men arc availing themselves of the hard times to consolidate their farms, and do not scruple to avail themselves of the remedy which the law in Ireland, as distinguished from the law in England, gives (hem, although in pursuing that remedy they may confiscate all such interest in the tenant as years of his labor and the expenditure of such capital as he possessed may have created " Air Drummond, when QnderSccretaiy for Ireland, wrote to the Irish Magistracy those now celebrated words, “Property has its duties as well as its rights hut Irish landowners 100 often forget their duties almost entirely, while they are only too keen in the enforcement of what they claim to he their rights.
