WARNED BY A DREAM.
The “ Manawata Times” tells a singular story of a sad dream being realised, for which, it states, it is prepared to vouch. A few days ago, it may be remembered, Air James Ann-Long, the owner of Akiteo station, and his nephew were drowned in the river. A telegram convoying the news of the sad event was sent to Mr Robert Linton, of Karero, Mr Armstrong being Mrs Linton’s brother. Some friends took the telegram from Palmerston, and gave it to Mr Linton. As might have been expected he was terribly shocked, but after frying to calm himself the party pcocceded towards the house. No sooner did Mrs Linton see them entering the door, than she said, “Oh, you have had news, I know ; two men have been drowned.” this was before the telegram had been handed to her, but after reading it she calmly exclaimed, “Ah, it’s poor James and Archie.” She then related how the night before she bad dreamt that she saw two men crossing' a river in a boat when it upset. Her husband, who she thought was standing by, was about to rush info the wafer, when she dragged him back saying “ Hon t go in ; there are plenty of poles about, and we can get them out that way.” Just thou she caught sight of one of the faces deep under the water, and it shot across her mind that it was one she had seen before, but could not recollect where. When handed the telegram, and having read its contents, she exclaimed, “ All ! the face I saw was poor Archie’s.” Difficulty of recollection may be accounted for by the change which years had made in him since she saw him. A day before receiving the telegram she told her husband about the dream, and stated that she felt quite convinced there would be bad nows ; indeed, such a hold did the conviction obtain on her mind that the bitterness of the calamity had been forestalled before the receipt of the news.
