A sharp debate look plane in the Assembly on Thursday over the Roothhy case. Some of the members contended that the service was siiU’eriiig from the long - delay in deciding, while others considered that the Government was right in giving the fullest enquiry.
During the discussion on the Licensed Victuallers Hill an attempt was made to render illegal contracts by which publicans agreed to obtain beer from one brewer exclusively, but the feeling of the House was adverse. An attempt to legislate against music, dancing, and theatricals at hotels also failed.
The export duty on gold is generally condemned in the Northern Territory. It is stated that the Paris Exhibition Commissioners have handed Roothhy £I2OO for his personal expenses at that Exhibition. QUEENSLAND. The “Courier,” which has usually issued a “Hansard” broad-sheet, omitted its issue on the 2nd, and also the Council “ Hansard ” on the drd, in consequence of legal advice that the publishers can bo held responsible for libellous matter expressed in debate. The special occasion of the non-publication was due to the remarks of the Minister of Works in connection with the witnesses at the committee of enquiry on the Hemmantt petition rc the Premier's purchase of rails in London ; also, in the Council strictures alfeoting the Government printers. It is believed the Government will telegraph a ratification of the mail service contract, accepting the responsibility. Parliament has demurred relative to the Premier’s right to the seal of Parliament. The demurrer will be argued in full Court on Tuesday. The blacks rushed Fitzgerald the surveyor's camp at Johnston River, killed the man in charge, and looted the camp.
