S. C. Toies Office. Monday Evening. Messrs Maclean and Stewart report for the past fortnight— Horses—The market for draught horses is still. Wo quote, for good useful farm marcs and geldings, £3O to £-10; medium sorts, from £lB to £2O. For light harness and hacks, from £9 to £lB. Cattle —The demand for store cattle is not so brisk, and buyers seemingly holding back. At. our last sale at the South Canterbury Yards, a considerable reduction in prices had to be made to ellcct sales. On account of various owners we sold about 40 head, springing heifers at from £1 17s Gd to £G ; yearlings from £2 to £3 ; cows at £lO to £ll. On Saturday'wc sold a nice lot of Ayrshire cows, from the Oamaru district, consisting of 7 head, which averaged a little over £ll per head, or.e specially good cow fetching £l4 10s. Sheep—Few stoic sheep are offering at present, and little business will he done nowuntil after shearing. Fat sheep—We have placed 1000 merino v,'ethers at 11s, and 900 cross-bred wethers at IGs, the latter being heavy weights.
Messrs William Collins and Co. report holding their marl et and sale by auction on Saturday of produce and general merchandise. Tire attendance was fully' up to the average, and as a result, all the lines submitted brought satisfactory figures. They quote, Derwent and seed potatoes, 40s per ton; onions, 4}d per lb ; farmers’ Hour, sacks £B, 501 b and 1001 b £9 ; bran, 50s ; sharps, 70s; butter, in kegs (inferior), 3d to Gd p?r lb ; hams, 81 per lb ; bacon. 7d per lb ; carcase pork, 4d to 5.01 per !b ; fowls, 4s to 4s Gd per pair ; goldfinch' in cases, 10s to 13s each ; boxes tea, 17s. ; lice, 25s per c.wt. ; No. 1 Compuiy’s sugar, 4.2 s per cwt ; No. 3 Company's sugar, 42s per cwt ; soap, 15s per cwt. A consignment of saddlery and liarsvws, household furniture, and general sundries were quitted dining the day at owners’ reserves. Wellington. August 28. Messrs Lacqy and Campbell report:— Chick wheat, 3s to 3s 3d ; oats, 2s to 2s 3d ; maize, 3s to 3s (id; Hour, in XOOihs, £1;?; bran, 8.1 ; pollard, £5 10s; fresh butter, 9d to lOd; salt nutter, overstocked, no sale; bacon and hams, at forced sale, Gd to 7KI, overstocked, no demand ; kidn-y potatoes, for seed, 3s (id : potatoes, £2 15s to £3 ; onions, overstocked, no sale ; stiitonshapcil cheese, 7<l ; ordinary cheese, 5d to Gd ; fowls, 4s Gd per pair; c.'gs, Is per dozen; Hobart Town apples, Its to 14s per ease.
