FRENCH CRIMINAL ROMANCE.

Properly treated there scorns to ho suggestions for the makingof a criminal romance in a case which has lately been occupying the attention of the French Law Courts. The scene opens in a post oliice, town of ihe Midi, where Georges P served as a clerk upon a salary which ho looked upon as insufficient. In the course of business money constantly passed through his'hands, hut it did not pass quite so freely as it should have clone, as some of it found its way to the pockets of the. impecunious Georges. The detectives, in time, became aware of these facts, and arrived suddenly one day for (lie purpose of arresting the culprit. AVith at least equal suddenness, however, he disappeared, and (ho town .in Midi was searched in vain. Some time passed and then comes the second scene, which takes place in a draper’s shop in the Faubourg Saint Denis, Paris. Business was being brisky carried on upon a certain morning, when the übiquitous police entered and looked around carefully. The establishment was going on in its ordinary fashion and there seemed othing (no excite attention or remark. The police, however fixed their eyes upon a young lady who had just measured out some ribbons and was making them up into a neat parcel. They regarded her carefully, and she blushed deeply, whereupon she was hidden to follow (he officers on a charge of robbing the post office, and she was addressed as Georges P . The mistress of the shop and the other assistants were highly indignant at the motion, and sympathised much with one whom (hoy regarded as grievously injured. As a mailer of fact, however, (lie suspicions of the police were correct. AF. Georges P had filled the role of feminine linen draper’s assistant villi such skill that the truth had never been suspected. It is a pity that such talents should have been so sadly misapplied.
