The year was begun with a deficit ol; the estimated revenue was £130,770 and expenditure £118,182, leaving a surplus of £12,578. After deducting the deficit at the beginning of the year, the estimates left a net surplus of £-1.868. The revenue for 1881 was estimated at £135,070 and the expenditure at £121.971, leaving a surplus of £IO,OOO or a surplus altogether of nearly £15,000. The customs showed a large increase. The amount proposed to be expended on public works was £275,000 including £120,000 for the Mersey railway. It was proposed to raise a 4 per cent loan of £507,000 for public works and in reduction of debentures. WESTERN AUSTRALIA. The Government has introduced a motion for the imposition of duties in the northern territory, on opium, salt, rice, fish, sugar, spirits, tobacco, cigars, wine, snuff, beer, and tea, and an export duty of os per ounce, on gold. In the insolvency of Samuel De. Young, merchant, Port Adelaide, the. accountant reported a dificicncy in the estate of £21,195.
