In their wisdom the members of the Borough Council last evening resolved to utilise the cellar beneath the municipal dove-cot as a howling lock-up for wandering and unregistered dogs, and to appoint the Town Clerk chief gaoler. It is to be hoped that the music of the mongrels beneath will not interfere with the eloquence above, and that this addition to the multifarious duties of Mr Lough will not prove the last straw that breaks the camel’s back.
Captain Jackson Barry’ intends visiting Timaru in the course of a fortnight for the purpose of delivering one of his racy lectures.
Dan Lee, champion light weight boxer of Timaru, had several rounds with young Jimmy Massey last evening. It is stated that Dan is ready to fight any man of his own weight for £2OO.
The proprietors of the Christchurch “ Echo” George Caygill, William White Fraser, Joseph Carnahan, and Samuel Johnston, who are charged with criminal libel at the instance of James Izett, editor of the “ Star,” have had their case adjourned till Friday.
