INDIAN CUT-THROATS.

The Calcutta “ Englishman,” referring to the recent murder of two French gentlemen in Atchin, says : “ The murder was entirely due to their temerity in venturing in a practically defenceless state into a country known to be swarming with cut-throats. The two gentlemen, MM. Wallon and Guillaume, the Java paper relates, took upon themselves the journey, with the view to exploring portions of the Atchin country known as Way lab. The local rajah of Tenom warned them of the danger they would run, both from man and beast, should they persist in their determination, and formally refused his permission to the undertaking. Undeterred, however, the savants proceeded with their design, accompanied by three attendants. Three days after their departure, news came that they had been murdered. The Governor of Atchin, on receipt of the news, at once determined to order troops to Tenom to punish the murderers, if possible. Their actual despatch, however, did not become necessary, as in the meanwhile it turned out that the Rajah of Tenom had acted very vigorously in the matter, having destroyed the houses, paddyfields, and pepper plantations of those supposed to have been concerned in the murder, and having, it is also believed, killed one of tbe leaders of the gang. A sum af money bas been placed at his disposal by the Dutch authorities to assist him in the capture of others implicated in the, murder, who ai-e still abroad. These events took place at the beginning of April.”
