At the wool sales to-day 10,1)00 bales were ottered, making a total of 175,000 bales since the opening. The tone of the market showed a better demand, and prices were firmly maintained. JX Gunpowder Plot. A report was current to-day that two barrels of gunpowder had been found in a railway tunnel under the Cork barracks but an enquiry proved the whole thing to be a hoax. Compensation to Widows and Orphans. Aug. 10. In the House of Commons the Employers Liability Hill has been passed. Sudden and Significant. The Hon. W. E. Eorstcr, Chief Secretary for Ireland, has started suddenly for Ireland. His mission, however, at present is unknown. Another Pasha Gone. CoNSTANTINOTJ.Ii, Aug. 19. Hefiz Pasha has been dismissed. The Siege of Candahar. Calcutta, Aug. 18. Isews comes to band that the citadel at Candabar is invested on three sides by Ayoub Ivban’s army. General Stewart reports that be reached Gaudamuk with the British force which was left at Cabal, after General Heberts’ departure for Candabar,and the evacuation is now completed.
