ROYAL GRATITUDE.

The London papers arc culling attention to the destitute condition of John Maloney, an ex soldier, and his wife, who at the age of eighty ought to bo saved from the workhouse. On August 22, 1822, Malony, then a private of the 73rd Regiment, was the means of saving the life of the then Princess Victoria, whose pon} 7 carriage had been upset in Kensington Gardens. At the time Maloney received a collection of 18s that was made up on the spot, and a guinea from the Duchess of Kent, and four years later a £5 note from the Duchess, through General Lord Harris, coupled with this intimation :—■ “ 1 feel it great pleasure in presenting you with £5, the gift of HerKKo r al Highness the Duchess of Kent, for your gallant and manly conduct in saving her dear child’s life on August 2‘J, 1822, in Kensington Gardens; but you arc to understand that it is an acquittance, and you arc not to make any further appeal to Her Highness.” And an acquittance it was, for although Maloney, through falling ill, and having left the 73rd made more than oue application, except a few shillings given him from the poorbox of the metropolitan police courts, not another penny has lie received.
