Mahoware, a Maori who was committed for trial some time ago, escaped yesterday morning by scaling the walls. He left word with some of his relatives that his reason for running away was that the gaoler’s accommodation was insufficient. So soon as the alterations take place in supply of food and blankets he promised to write to the Magistrate and return to gaol. The prisoner is not yet captured. Attempted Suicide of a Commission Afjent. Christchurch, August 14. This morning \V. 11. Langford, commission agent, took a dose ol stiychninc and was removed to the hospital. He is now in a very critical state. The reason for the act is believed to be depressed circumstances, E,and Sales. At the City Court, William Henry Felton was charged with stealing a cheque for £IOO, under peculiar circumstances. The prosecutor, George Worsdcll and prisoner met at Milton, where they had been gambling together. Worsdell and a young woman, to whom Felton was engaged, travelled by train from Milton to Dunedin, where they were joined by Felton. It is alleged that Felton got possession of the cheque while the prosecutor was drunk, and cashed it. The prisoner was remanded till Monday. A Whishey Mill at Siueskiu.
