TIMARU BOROUGH COUNCIL.

An ordinary mooting of the Tiinarn Borough Council was held last evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor, and Crs. Jackson, Gibson, Jones, Boss, Greenup, Shepherd, Gabitcs and Bruce. CORRESPONDENCE. From Mr Turnbull, Captain of the Fire Brigade, stating that Lieutenant Mills, who hud served in the Brigade for a number of A’cars, was about leaving the colony, and asking the Council s cooperation in presenting him with a testimonial. , From Messrs C. F. Ilallam, lucbaul Watson, and Ogilvie and Byers asking for extension of time in which to comply with the Building Regulations enforcing the erection of brick chimneys m place of those at present in use. Gibson thought that the applications should, be refused, because the committee could not make an exception in one ease without doing so in all. The amendment was seconded by Cr Jones.

Cr. Boss proposed as an amendment — "That this Council cvnnot allow any extension of time, unless the written consent of the owners and occupiers of adjoining property lias been first obtained.”

Cr. Boss’ amendment was carried

From B. W. Hutton, asking for permission to retain a small desk-table outside his shop on mail days for tire sale of newspapers. The Council refused to take any action in the matter. From two ratepayers, asking for the remission of their rate owing to their inability to pay them. Granted. From William Evans, asking permission to <piany stone on bis section, No. 2ud, at Rhodes’ Town. The nearest house to the quarry was that of Mr Collins, and lie bad no objection to the quarrying. This report was read and it was resolved £(o purchase an additional horse and a scoop for the use of the Corporation. protest. It was moved by Cr. Gibson, seconded by Cr. Shepherd, and carried, —“ That this Council respectfully protest against clause 27 of the Municipal Corporation Act Amendment Act becoming law ; and we arc further of opinion that the provisions of the present Act as regards publishing, are in every way satisfactory, being both economical and ellicient. (Should the proposed by-law become law, and all by-laws have to he published in extenso, it would increase the expenditure by at least two hundred per cent, without the slightest, advantage to any one except newspaper proprietors ; and that copies of this resolution be sent to the Premier and the members for South Canterbury.” AI’JM.WATIoXS. Mr Kimber waited on the Council with a view to getting the by-law relating to verandahs in front of business premises altered or repealed. He would ask on behalf of himself and other tradesmen that the Council would permit, th'c erection of sunshades in front of shops.
