The British fought with characteristic bravery and determination but from the overwhelming numbers of the enemy, the General saw that the total destruction of the force was inevitable unless he ordered a retreat. This was done and one-third of his men ami a quantity of war material, including four guns, were saved. The battle took place on July 27.
