The British troops at Oabul, under General Roberts,include the G9th, 92nd, and 72nd infantry, The London -water scheme has been condemned. Special despatches from General Burrows, respecting the Afghan disaster
date that the Brhish force numbered 3000, and 1000 cnee led their escape. The a!lack was commenced by the British and not by the Afghans. The r.roops had a slight advantage and gained at the onset, but the enemy wore posted on advantagous positions and in overwhelming force, being estimated at from 12,000 to 15,000. The British fought with characteristic bravery and determination but from the overwhelming numbers of the enemy, the General saw that the total destruction of the force was inevitable unless he ordered a retreat. This was done and one-third of his men ami a quantity of war material, including four guns, were saved. The battle took place on July 27.
