CHINA AND THE EAST.
[By Telegraph.] Cooktown, Aug. 4. The Eastern and Australian Compan’s steamship Norraanby arrived from Singapore with the Torres Straits mail. She brings the following items of Eastern news: — The Chinese preparations for war continue unabated. Prince Ching.and the Viceroy of Kansan still maintain their ascendency, and there is evciy reason to believe the warlike feeling is undiminished at Pekin.
Six thousand French troops will occupj r Ton quin, in Cochin China in September. Piracy is rife at the present time in Chinese waters.
