Mr Heynolds gave notice to move for the appointment of a committee to enquire into the cost (with a view to their reduction) of the oHlccrs of the House. COMPENSATION TO CONSTA IJLES. Dr Grace asked if Government intended to dismiss three Wellington constables of very long service without giving them compensation. Mr Whitaker protested against the question. He presumed that if the odiccrs ivere entitled to compensation they would get it. If they ivcrc not entitled, they could not get it unless Parliament specially voted it. EDUCATION. The debate on the cost of Education was continued. Mr Chamberlain advocated the reimposition of fees and the keeping of children away from school until 7 years old. Mr Lahmann thought the educational system most extravagant. He saw uo necessity for central Hoards. Mr Mcnzics also supported the imposition of fees. Mr Williamson said it was high time we cut out our coat according to our cloth. Mr Waterhouse said we spent 25 per cent of our revenue on education, while in England it was only 4 per cent. He hoped the long discussion which his motion had evoked would cause the Government to consider (ho question with a view to economy and reform, during the recess, or next session a Parliamentary enquiry into the subject would be imperative.
