AMERICAN ITEMS.

Two terrible steamboat accidents have occurred at Lone; Island Sound, lu one the Starmiugton and Narraganset collided during a fog, and the latter took fire. Thirteen persons were burned or drowned. Two young men unable to swim, killed each other in their desperation. The captain and Officers are charged with cowardice and mismanagement; the survivors sue the company. In the other case the steamer Savanaka caught fire by explosion, and 40 passengers were roasted or drowned. The captain and crew behaved with great coolness, or otherwise the loss of life would have been much greater. Tlanlan was beaten badly at Providence, Rhode Island, in a race with Boyd, Riley, Iloss, and others. Ross finished with SGsecs lead, Riley second, Ten Eyck third. 50,000 people witnessed the contest. Hanlan’s trouble was said to be a stitch in his side, but there is no definite information with regard to it. Riley says that after making the turn, he seemed unable to pull, and gave up the contests though suffering from cramp. Others say he was simply out-rowed and beaten. He returned to Canada much disheartened. He will train for the race with Trickctt in England.
